2023 goals on notebook

2023 is upon us, which means you’ve likely already started thinking about all the great things that are to come in the new year. One popular way to kick-start the year is by creating a list of New Year’s resolutions. For many people, these goals revolve around increasing their health and wealth. Well, an easy way to accomplish that is by making your resolutions about your oral health. Read on for a few ideas that can help keep your smile in tip-top shape all year long.

Make Flossing a Daily Habit

Everyone knows they’re supposed to floss every day, yet many people still don’t do it. Maybe you feel like you don’t have enough time or you’re simply too tired to clean between your teeth. Whatever the case is, you should still make the effort to floss at least once a day in 2023. In doing so, you can drastically lower your risk of gum disease and tooth decay in the hard-to-reach places between your teeth. Best of all, your breath will be much fresher as well!

Brush for a Full 2 Minutes

Are you cleaning your teeth for at least two minutes? Studies have discovered that Americans are actually brushing for significantly less than one minute! For the best results, you need to make sure you’re cleaning your teeth for the recommended amount of time. If needed, you can use a timer or an electric toothbrush with a built-in timer to ensure you’re brushing long enough. Another way to track time is by singing a timing song.

Quit Smoking

It’s no surprise that smoking is one of the most harmful habits for your smile and overall health. Not only does it increase your risk of certain oral health issues (i.e., gum disease and tooth loss), but it can make it harder for you to replace your teeth with dental implants. Although this is one of the most difficult resolutions to keep, it’s the most beneficial for your health!

Stay Hydrated

Dry mouth occurs when your mouth isn’t producing enough saliva to consistently wash away bacteria from your teeth. When this happens, it can increase the risk of cavities. Luckily, you can prevent these issues by staying as hydrated as possible! Try sipping on water all day long to keep your mouth moist.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

One resolution you should aim to keep in the coming year is to stay on top of your routine preventive care. Visiting your dentist twice a year for a routine checkup and cleaning is essential for a healthy smile. If it’s been several years since you saw a dentist, don’t put it off any longer! Contact your dentist right away to get the care you need.
